SHEPARD FAIREY
When Shepard Fairey’s in town you know about it. He’s everywhere. His latest exhibition ‘Sound and Vision’, his first in London for 5 years, sees him on musically inspired territory. Spread over 3 galleries in the East End the prolific Fairey creates a visual assault with the sheer quality, volume and scale of his work. There’s loads of great musical referencing mixed with Fairey’s political bite and wit. His massive Jamie Reid inspired piece ‘Bright Future – Save Petrol, Burn Cars’ is one of the genuine highlights but as with all his work there’s so much depth and texture even in the smallest pieces. Fairey’s recent skirmish with the US courts, where he was hammered for using found pictures for the famous Obama ‘Hope’ image doesn’t seem to have dimmed his appetite for biting at the heels of authority. And he’s a right nice chap to boot…
